Text Messages & iMessages
There are many options available to monitor your child’s messages. No option is perfect and there are pros and cons to each. This article will provide the basics.
If you have an iPhone, the Text Message Forwarding feature will allow you to send and receive SMS text messages on the iPad.
This article describes how to setup the Text Message Forwarding feature.
You can easily see the timestamp for individual messages by dragging any message to the left. All the messages will slide left and the timestamps for each individual message will be revealed.
This article provides more details on viewing message timestamps.
The messages with a blue background are iMessages and the messages with a green background are SMS/MMS messages.
This article explains the difference between an iMessage and an SMS message.
There are several reasons why you may not be receiving messages from iPhone users. This article describes two of the most common issues.
It depends on whether you are having issues receiving iMessages or SMS text messages. If your iPhone is connected to the Internet and you can’t receive iMessages, try resetting iMessage as described in this article.
If you are having issues receiving SMS text messages, make sure your iPhone does not have Airplane Mode active. Otherwise, you will need to contact your cellular provider to have them check your account settings.
If you just switched from an iPhone to another phone and you are no longer receiving text messages from iPhone users, this article should help.
These articles explains the difference between a text message and an iMessage.
To answer this question, it is important to understand the difference between an iMessage and an SMS text message.
For iMessages to appear on both your iPhone and iPad, both devices need to be setup with the same Apple ID in the Messages settings.
SMS text messages will not automatically appear on your iPad. You need to setup the Text Message Forwarding feature on the iPhone to have SMS text messages forwarded to your iPad.
This article provides additional information to help resolve the issue.
Prior to iOS 8.1, you could not receive regular SMS text messages on an iPad. Starting in iOS 8.1, the Text Message Forwarding function on the iPhone will allow SMS text mesages to be sent and received on the iPad. This article provides additional information about sending and receiving SMS text messages on an iPad.
iMessages are basically text messages sent from one Apple device to another Apple device. The message is sent through Apple’s servers rather than using the cellular provider’s network. If you are interested, this article provides more information on the difference between an iMessage and an SMS text message.
You could be getting storage capacity messages for two different reasons:
- The internal iPhone storage is getting full
- Your iCloud storage has almost reached its limit.
If the iPhone storage full, you will not be able to take any additional photos or download any new apps.
If the iPhone is not backing up to iCloud, you likely exceeded your iCloud storage capacity.
This article will provide additional information to resolve the Not Enough Storage Available issue.
This article will help you identify what is using the most storage space on your iPhone.
Typically, many storage issues are due to the number of photos or videos on your device. You also need to consider photos that were sent to you in text messages. Photos and especially videos can be very large files and will quickly use large amounts of storage space.
To sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, go to Settings -> iCloud, scroll to the bottom of the screen, and select Sign Out. This will delete the iCloud account from your iPhone. It will not delete the account on any other devices you may have. Your iCloud data should still be available at https://www.icloud.com.
Once you select Sign Out, the iPhone will ask if you want to delete or keep the data on the iPhone. If you delete the data from the iPhone, all contacts and other iCloud data will be deleted from the iPhone. If you keep the iCloud data on the iPhone and sign in with a different Apple ID, the iCloud data (such as contacts and calendar data) can be merged to the iCloud account for the new Apple ID.

Unfortunately, there is no simple way to create a group mailing list in the Contacts app in iOS. However, you can create a distribution list by typing all the email addresses and copying them into a contact sheet.
- Open the Notes app on your device and tap the plus sign “+” to open a new note.
- Enter the email addresses you want to add to the distribution list. Type a less than sign “<” at the beginning of each address and a greater than sign “>” at the end. Separate each address with a comma. For example, < email1 > , < email2 >. Do not include spaces between the “< >” signs and the email address. To make typing easier, you can add the “< >” signs after you enter all the email addresses to save some switching between keyboard layouts.
- When the list is complete, Select All the addresses and choose Copy.
- Exit the Notes app by pressing the Home button and open the Contacts app.
- Tap the plus sign “+” to create a new contact, enter a name for the group, paste the list of addresses into the email field, and tap Done when you are finished.
Alternatively, to make typing a little easier, you could type the list of email addresses on your computer and email it to yourself. When you receive the list of addresses on your iOS device, copy the list from the email and paste it in the email field of the group contact.
If you want to save all the contacts to your computer, go to https://www.icloud.com on the computer. Once signed in with your Apple ID, you can select the Contacts icon to see all your contacts. To export your contacts, select the gear icon in the bottom left of the window, select all your contacts, and choose Export vCard. This will save all your contacts to a file on the computer.
Typically, you will email a document from within the app that created the document. For example, if you are editing a document in Pages, tap the Sharing button (a square with an arrow pointing out the top) to email the document. The Sharing button appears in most apps.
There are many ways to share a photo with another iPhone. For example, you can email the photo, send it as an iMessage, share it using AirDrop, or share it in a PhotoStream.
When you are viewing the photo on your iPhone, tap the Sharing icon (the square with the arrow coming out the top) in the bottom left corner of the screen. This will bring up the sharing screen where you can select the method you wish to use to share the photo.
To delete a photo album that you created on the iPhone, open the Photos app and select Albums in the bottom right corner of the window. This should allow you to view all the photo albums on the iPhone. Next, tap Edit in the top right corner of the window. Any albums that you created should now have a red circle to the left of the album. Tap the red circle then tap on the Delete option that appears. This will remove the album from the iPhone.
If a photo album appeared on your iPhone after syncing with iTunes on your computer, you may not be able to delete the album as described above. Since iTunes created the album, you will likely need to use iTunes to delete the album. Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone from the Devices list and select the Photos tab near the top right of the window. You will see an option to “Sync Photos from”, which allows you to select a folder on your computer to use for syncing photos. If the folder shown in the drop-down list matches the name of the album you want removed from your iPhone, uncheck the box for Sync Photos and select Apply or Sync in the bottom right of the window. This will remove the album and all the pictures in that album from your iPhone.
If iTunes is not currently syncing photos from a folder, you can remove an unwanted album with a slightly different process. On your computer, create a folder with the same name as the album you want to delete from your iPhone. On the Photos tab in iTunes, select the empty folder you just created and click Apply. This should delete the album and its photos from the iPhone.
If you have a Mac computer with Photo Stream enabled on the iPhone and the Mac, your photos will automatically be available in the Photos on the Mac. Through iCloud, your photos are automatically shared across all your Apple devices.
There are several ways to transfer photos from your iPhone to a Windows PC. You could use iTunes to transfer the photos when you sync your iPhone, but there is an easier way than trying to understand the iTunes sync process.
1. Connect your iPhone to the PC without iTunes running and wait for a popup asking you what you want to do with the device.
2. Select “View Content”, locate your photos on your iPhone, and copy them to the desired location on your PC.
3. If you don’t see a popup window after connecting your iPhone, open “My Computer” and locate your iPhone in the window.
4. Open the iPhone to find your photos and copy them to the desired location on your PC.
Additionally, if you have a digital camera, whatever software you use to get pictures off your camera will likely work with the iPhone too.
This article from the Apple website provides additional details.
Export contacts from an iPhone or iPad to a computer by using iCloud. First, make sure your Contacts are being synced to iCloud by opening the Settings app and selecting iCloud. You need to be signed in with your Apple ID and make sure the Contacts slider is turned on. This will upload your contacts to Apple’s servers in the cloud.
On your computer, you can then go to https://www.icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID and password. Once signed in, you can select the Contacts icon to see all your contacts. Any changes you make from this screen will automatically be updated on all your devices.
To export your contacts, select the gear icon in the bottom left of the window, select all your contacts, and choose Export vCard. This will save all your contacts to a file on your computer.
The purpose of iCloud is to automatically keep information synced between all your devices. When you update information on any device, those changes are automatically pushed to all devices.
If you don’t want to use iCloud to export your contacts, there are apps available in the App Store that will download contacts from your iPhone to a computer. I haven’t used any of these apps, so I can’t provide any recommendations on their use.
When you get a new Apple device and turn it on for the first time, you generally step through a simple on-screen setup process. During the setup process, there is an option to create an Apple ID if you don’t already have one.
Alternatively, you can create an Apple ID at any time by going to this website.
This article provides additional details.
To change the Apple ID on your device, you need to sign out of the Apple ID under the Settings app for Messages, FaceTime, iCloud, and iTunes & App Store. Once signed out of the old Apple ID, you can sign in with your new Apple ID. This article may provide some additional information.
To change the Apple ID for iCloud, go to Settings -> iCloud, scroll to the bottom of the screen, and select Sign Out. This will sign the device out of the iCloud account. It will not affect the account on any other devices you may have. Your iCloud data should still be available at https://www.icloud.com.
Once you select Sign Out, the device will ask if you want to delete or keep the data on the device. If you delete the data, all contacts and other iCloud data will be deleted from the device. If you keep the iCloud data on the device and sign in with a different Apple ID, the contacts and calendar data can be merged to the iCloud account for the new Apple ID.
These are types of cellular data networks. Click the link below to read my detailed article on this subject.
This is a great question, and one that I get a lot. Sharing an Apple ID for purchased material is great, but it causes issues with sharing contacts if you don’t set it up correctly.
To understand what’s happening, think of the information on your phone as two different categories:
1. data you purchase/download from Apple (Apps, Music…), and
2. personal data (Contacts, Calendars…).
You should share one Apple ID for all iTunes and App Store purchases. This will allow you to share purchases across your devices. Go to the Settings -> iTunes & App Stores and sign in with the shared Apple ID. To avoid all downloads going to all your devices, turn off Automatic Downloads in Settings -> iTunes & App Stores.
To keep your personal data separate, you should setup separate Apple IDs for each user. Go to Settings -> iCloud and sign in to your own personal Apple ID on your device. Each other user should sign in to their Apple ID on their device. This will keep your personal data separate.
This article provides a detailed description on sharing iTunes and App Store purchases on multiple devices.
This article explains how to add a website icon to your home screen.
If the website has a custom icon established, it will be used for your home screen icon. Otherwise, an image of the web page will be used as the home screen icon.
When it comes to printing from the iPad, you basically have three options:
1. Buy an AirPrint capable printer. A list of AirPrint printers can be found on this Apple support page.
2. Use a computer program that will allow the iPad to connect to a printer connected to your computer.
3. If you have a wireless printer that is not AirPrint capable, you can buy an app for the iPad that should allow it to connect to a wireless printer on the same network.
Ultimately, the best option for you really depends on what printer you have. If you don’t have a wireless printer, you may need to buy software for your computer (option #2). The downside of this option is your computer would need to be ON anytime you wanted to print.
The iBooks app is Apple’s app for reading books and PDF files. From within the iBooks app, you can browse the iBooks Store to download books to the iPad.
This article describes how to save PDF files to iBooks on the iPad.
You can also download other ebook readers such as Kindle from the App Store.
To disable the volume buttons on your device, go to Settings -> Sounds and turn off the slider for Change with Buttons.
When flying on an airplane, you are typically required to turn off cellular devices during flight. Switching the iPhone (or iPad) to Airplane Mode will disable cellular and wireless communications on the device. This includes services such as:
– Cellular (voice and data)
– Location Services.
This will allow you to use the device during flight for functions that do not require connectivity. Keep in mind, the airline may still request your device be turned off (not just Airplane Mode) during takeoff and landing. You can typically use your device in Airplane Mode during the cruise portion of the flight.
Some airlines allow you to enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth during flight. You can do this while leaving the iOS device in Airplane Mode by using the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.
There are several websites that allow you to check your Internet connection speed.
One such website is http://www.speedtest.net. Go to their website and click Begin Test. It will test your connection speed from the device you are currently using.
The company also provides a Speedtest app for use on your iOS device.
Alert messages are saved in the Notification Center on the iPhone. You can view the Notification Center at any time by swiping down from the top of the screen. All recent alerts and notifications are displayed and can be customized. For more information on customizing alerts and the Notification Center, click this link to see my detailed article about customizing the iPhone notifications.
You can exit the Notification Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or by pressing the Home button.
Copying music from iTunes on your PC to an iPhone can be done several ways and is not always intuitive. Basically, you have two options for copying music to the iPhone: manually and automatically when the iPhone is synced with iTunes.
The simplest approach is to manually copy the songs you want. Connect the iPhone to your PC and open iTunes. Select the iPhone in the Devices list, then select the Summary page from the menu near the top of the window. Towards the bottom of the screen, you should see an option to Manually manage music and videos. Click the box to select this option. Next, go to your Music Library in iTunes and drag the songs you want to the iPhone. This will copy the songs to your iPhone. The songs will remain in your Music Library, as iTunes makes a duplicate copy on the iPhone.
If you want to setup automatic syncing, the process will vary depending on if you want to sync your entire music library or only some songs. To sync your entire music library, connect the iPhone to your PC, open iTunes, and select the iPhone in the Devices list. Select the Music page from the menu near the top of the window. Click the box to Sync Music and select the button for Entire music library. Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page and your entire music library should be copied to your iPhone.
If you only want to sync certain songs instead of your entire music library, many people setup playlists to manage what songs are copied. Rather than confuse things with playlists, there is another option. Connect the iPhone to your PC and open iTunes. Select your Music Library in iTunes and select Songs from the menu near the top of the window. You should see a list of all the songs in your iTunes library. At the left of each song name, you will see a small square. Click the square for each song you want to copy to your iPhone. Next, select the Summary page for the iPhone. Near the bottom of the Summary page, you will see an option to Sync only checked songs and videos. Click on the box to select this option, and then click on the Apply button at the bottom of the page. You may also need to setup iTunes to sync your entire music library as I mentioned above for the sync process to work. Only the selected songs will be synced instead of the entire music library.
Please note, any songs you currently have on your iPhone will likely be erased when you setup automatic syncing.
My iPhone was stolen. How can I prevent the person that stole it from viewing the information on my iPhone or using my Apple ID?
If you had Find My iPhone enabled on your iPhone, go to https://www.icloud.com, sign in with your Apple ID and password, and open the Find My iPhone app. If your iPhone is turned on and connected to the Internet, it will be located in this app. If it is located, you have the option to set a passcode on the device or to remotely erase the device.
Additionally, if your iPhone can’t be located with Find My iPhone, go to https://appleid.apple.com and change your Apple ID password. If you don’t have a passcode on your IPhone, this won’t stop someone from viewing what’s on the device. However, it will stop them from using anything with your Apple ID account. Once you reset your password, you will need to enter the new password on your other Apple devices to access services such as iTunes & App Store, Messages, and FaceTime.
If you haven’t disabled Find My iPhone, the service is probably still active. If your iPhone required a passcode to unlock the device, hopefully you picked a code that isn’t easily guessed. It this case, the thief may not have been able to access your iPhone data at all.
To prevent accidental deletion of apps, go to the Settings app, select “General”, scroll down, tap “Restrictions”, tap “Enable Restrictions”, create a four digit passcode and enter it again when prompted, then toggle “Deleting Apps” to OFF.
If a paid app does get deleted, you can always open the “App Store” app, select to the “Purchases” tab, and download the app again at no additional charge.
This article provides additional details for protecting apps from being accidentally deleted.
